Help be a part of the solution! The Art of Climate Change on Kickstarter – an interactive social media & art show/exhibit this summer.
Climate change is HERE and climate change is happening NOW. It is not a figment of your imagination and the weather outside indeed is “frightening.”
As I write this, the UK is getting battered by unprecedented storms and in California where I live, we are facing the possibility of a MEGA drought. As a long-time artist, writer and educator, I have been sounding the alarm bell for years. The question loomed large for me: How are we, as a collective society, going to tackle a huge problem?
That was when I had a light-bulb moment.
The idea came to me last year when I realized we need to have a multi-modal approach to addressing climate change. (more…)
Materialistic is described as excessively concerned with physical comforts or the acquisition of material things rather than intellectual, moral, spiritual, or artistic-cultural values, which become impoverished, and the propensity towards adhering to the philosophy of materialism (the theory that regards only tangible or measurable matter as constituting the universe and all its phenomena). If your entire universe is material focussed you miss out substantially on the intellectual pursuits or spirituality and tend to lose out on the morality aspects, which is what went wrong and has brought the planet to verge of devastation through extreme levels of global consumption.
Amaterialistic would therefore be the antonym of it with emphasis on intellectual, moral, spiritual, or artistic-cultural values and away from securing happiness largely from material consumption, popularizing of which would certainly reduce global consumption to some extent. It can be readily noted that an absolute state of amaterialism would be incompatible with life although some serious legendary mediators in India are said to have gone without food for months or even years.
Need for a ratio reversal. It would be reasonable to assume that an average adult in the wealthy nations of EU, N. America, Australia etc., derives 80% of happiness from consumption or materialism and rest from amaterialism or intellectual, moral-spiritual, or artistic-cultural sources. (more…)
If we see clearly who we are and what we have done, we can recognize human behaviour that persists through many times and cultures. Knowing this can tell us what we are likely to do, where we are likely to go from here….the future of everything we have accomplished since our intelligence evolved will depend on the wisdom of our actions over the next few years. Like all creatures, humans have made their way in the world so far by trial and error; unlike other creatures, we have a presence so colossal that error is a luxury we can no longer effort. The world has grown too small to forgive us any big mistakes.
A Short History of Progress
Meaning of Progress
Human development is an evolutionary process which has led to the appearance of ‘modern humans’ about 200,000 years ago. Wright points out that we had “no inkling of this process, let alone its consequences until only the last six or seven… generations. (more…)
This treatise is an utterly bitter exposure of truths that humanity is intent on continuing to practice until its demise or serious enough chaos that would disrupt the civilization of today into something entirely unrecognizable as civic living appears on the horizon. That would be not too unlike the good old pre-historic times of stone carved tools to hunt the wildlife. Except that there may not be any wildlife at all.
Evidence of cowardly unreasonableness and effective insanity of residents of Lower Mainland of British Columbia
I have attempted to contact people at five locations that I spend time at when I am outside of my room and these five (5) locations are:
City of Vancouver Parks and recreation locations like Vancouver Aquatic Center.
City of Surrey Parks and recreation locations like North Surrey Recreation Center (NSRC).
Carnegie Center library and community center at Main St. & E. Hastings Vancouver.
UBC learning Exchange at 612 Main St. (more…)
Viewed at a closer angle we have developed this “gimme a pill for it doc” philosophy. And by ‘we’ it is meant the wealthy citizens of nations of the West and includes the well to do residents of Middle-East and the East as well.
We behave recklessly from speeding, using drugs, unsafe sex to trashing the planet as a society. Then we run off to the equally unaccountable elected officials and want them to waive a magic wand to solve the wrath of the decades of our recklessness and stupidities (see “Atimea Stupidosis Sustainabilis” – Google it) .
We elect them based on the false promises of making us even richer which is a mathematical impossibility because that requires an exponential output from a finite planet. (more…)
